The confusing part: 1000 or 1024
There is a genuine ambiguity worth knowing about. Historically a kilobyte often meant 1024 bytes — a power of two, natural for computers — while the strict metric definition is 1000. This is why a drive sold as a terabyte shows as slightly less once your computer counts it, because the marketing uses 1000 and the operating system often counts in 1024. The units were even split into separate names to fix this, though the old usage lingers. It is the reason storage numbers never quite seem to add up.
