They run in opposite directions
There is a mental twist worth flagging. Miles per gallon is better when higher — more miles from each gallon. Litres per hundred kilometres is better when lower — less fuel to cover the distance. So the two scales run in opposite directions, which is exactly why comparing a high mpg figure against a litres-per-hundred figure by eye is so confusing. And note the US and imperial gallon differ, so a US mpg and a UK mpg are not the same, another reason to convert carefully rather than compare raw numbers.
