Why your iPhone photos won't open elsewhere

Since 2017, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC — a format built on HEVC compression that packs a picture into roughly half the space of a JPEG at similar quality. It's a genuine win for your phone's storage, and a genuine headache everywhere else: HEVC is patent-encumbered, so Windows needs an add-on to preview it and plenty of upload forms and older apps reject it outright.

Why your iPhone photos will not open

HEIC is Apple's efficient photo format — roughly half the size of JPG at similar quality — and it is the default on modern iPhones. The catch is that plenty of Windows programs, older Android phones, web forms and printing services still cannot read it, which is why a photo that looks fine on your phone arrives as an unopenable file for someone else.

Converting to JPG trades a little file size for the format nothing refuses. If you send photos to other people often, it is also worth switching your iPhone camera to 'Most Compatible' so it captures JPG from the start.
