The clever thing about the A series
The A series has an elegant property worth knowing: each size is exactly half the one above, because the sheets all share the same proportions. Cut an A3 in half and you get two A4s; fold an A4 and you get A5. That is why scaling and booklet-making work so cleanly with them. US Letter does not follow this scheme, which is the root of the mismatch when a document set for one is printed on the other — margins shift and content can clip, so setting the right size up front avoids the surprise.
