Quarter of Year Finder

Find which quarter of the year a date falls in.

Locating the quarter

The year divides into four quarters, and knowing which one a date belongs to is routine in business, finance and reporting. This finds the quarter for any date, for the calendar year or a fiscal one that starts in a different month.

Quarters and why they can differ

Calendar quarters are simple three-month blocks starting in January, but the wrinkle is the fiscal year: many organisations run their financial year from a month other than January, so their quarters are shifted, and the same date can sit in a different quarter depending on whose calendar you mean. This is a real source of confusion when coordinating across companies or interpreting financial information, since a reference to a particular quarter is only unambiguous once you know which fiscal calendar it uses. Quarters matter because so much of business is organised around them — reporting, targets, budgets and reviews all run on a quarterly rhythm — so being able to place a date in the right quarter, under the relevant year, is a small but frequent need in the commercial world.

Questions & answers

What are the four calendar quarters?

Three-month blocks starting in January — the first quarter is January to March, and so on through the year.

Why can the same date be in different quarters?

Because organisations using a fiscal year not starting in January have shifted quarters, so a date's quarter depends on whose calendar you mean.
