How the line is added
The line is not real formatting; it is a combining character laid over each letter, which is why the result travels as plain text and works where actual formatting is unavailable. It displays in most modern apps, though the exact look can vary a little between them, and like other combining-character effects it can confuse screen readers. It is perfect for a casual crossed-out flourish, less so for anything that must be read aloud cleanly.
