What bass testing reveals, with a caution
Low-frequency test tones let you check several things: how deep your system can play before the sound drops off or disappears, whether the bass is clean or distorts and rattles, and whether a subwoofer is working and set up well. Sweeping through low frequencies can also reveal room problems, where certain bass notes boom or vanish depending on where you sit, due to how sound waves interact with the room. An important caution comes with any bass testing: very low frequencies at high volume put real strain on speakers and can damage them, and can also be felt as much as heard, so start at a low volume and raise it carefully rather than blasting deep tones, which risks harming equipment that is not built for it.
