Why editors work in frames
Frames are the atomic unit of video — the smallest step you can make — so precise editing, syncing and calculation happen in frame counts rather than fractions of a second. Converting a timecode to frames lets you do exact arithmetic: how many frames between two points, where a cut lands, how long a clip runs to the frame. As with the forward conversion, the frame rate is critical and drop-frame timecode needs care, but for a given rate, turning timecode into an absolute frame count is precisely what a lot of video work depends on.
