Trial Balance Calculator
Check whether a trial balance balances — that total debits equal total credits.
The bookkeeping sanity check
In double-entry bookkeeping every transaction has equal debits and credits, so the totals of all debit and credit balances should match. A trial balance lists them to check exactly that. This adds up your debits and credits and tells you whether they balance, the routine check that catches many posting errors.
Enter your debit and credit balances to check the totals.
What balancing does and doesn't prove
It is worth being clear about the limits. A trial balance that does not balance definitely contains an error — a figure entered once, a transposed number, a wrong side — and the difference itself can hint at the type. But a trial balance that does balance is not proof the books are correct: an entry posted to the wrong account, or a transaction missed entirely on both sides, leaves the totals matching while the accounts are wrong. So balancing is a necessary check that catches many mistakes, not a guarantee of accuracy — a useful first line, not the last word.
Trial Balance Calculator FAQ
What does it mean if the trial balance doesn't balance?
There is definitely an error — often a figure entered once, transposed, or posted to the wrong side. The difference can hint at the cause.
Does a balanced trial balance mean the books are correct?
No — an entry in the wrong account, or a transaction missed on both sides, still balances. It catches many errors but does not prove accuracy.
