Reading a contact file
A vCard — a .vcf file — is the standard way contact details are shared and exported: name, phone numbers, emails, address, organisation and more, stored as text. Opened raw it is a list of coded fields; this lays it out as a readable contact card, so you can see exactly who and what is in a file before importing it or check the details it carries.

Handy when moving contacts around
vCards turn up whenever contacts move between systems — an export from a phone or mail app, a contact someone shared, a backup file. Being able to read one directly lets you confirm it holds what you expect before importing it somewhere, or pull out a single detail without loading it into an address book.
