What the antilog is really doing

The antilog can sound mysterious but it is simply exponentiation — the antilog of a number, in a given base, is that base raised to the number. It exists as a named idea because logarithms and antilogs are a matched pair, one undoing the other, and both were essential in the era of log tables and slide rules, when antilogs were how you got back to an ordinary number after doing a calculation in logarithms. That era is gone, but the concept remains useful wherever you work with logarithmic quantities and need to return to the original scale — converting a decibel level back to a sound intensity, or a pH back to a concentration. Understanding the antilog as just raising the base to a power removes the mystery and shows it is a tool you already have.
