Why the median often beats the mean

The most useful thing to understand here is the difference between the mean and the median, both measures of the centre. The mean is the average, but it is pulled by extreme values — one very large number drags it up — while the median, the middle value, is not. This is why average income can look high when most people earn far less, skewed by a few very high earners: the median gives a truer sense of the typical person.
