Average Calculator
Calculate the average of a set of numbers.
The everyday average
The average, or mean, of a set of numbers is their sum divided by how many there are — the everyday measure of a typical value. This calculates it for the numbers you enter, quickly and without slips.

What an average hides
The average is genuinely useful but famously easy to misuse, because it compresses a whole set into one number and hides how the values are spread. Two very different sets can share the same average — a group all near the middle, and a group split between extremes, can average identically while telling completely different stories. The average is also sensitive to outliers, where a single unusual value skews it. So an average is a good starting summary but rarely the whole picture; pairing it with a sense of the spread, or checking the median, guards against the classic mistakes people make when they treat an average as if it described every member of the set.
Average Calculator FAQ
How is the average calculated?
By adding all the numbers and dividing by how many there are — the sum over the count.
What does an average hide?
The spread — two very different sets can share an average, and a single outlier can skew it, so an average alone rarely tells the whole story.
