Area Calculator
Calculate the area of common shapes — rectangles, circles, triangles and more.
Area for any common shape
Area is the space a two-dimensional shape covers, and each shape has its own formula. This calculates the area of the common shapes from their dimensions, so you do not have to remember every formula or work out which applies.
Choose a shape and enter its dimensions to find the area.
Breaking down awkward shapes
Real-world areas are often not a single neat shape, and the useful trick is that any complex outline can be broken into simple shapes whose areas you add up — an L-shaped room is two rectangles, an odd plot is a rectangle plus a triangle. This is exactly how you handle the areas that matter in practice, from flooring a room to a plot of land. Getting the units right is the other essential: area is in square units, and mixing units, or forgetting to square them, is the common slip. Between a formula for each basic shape and the divide-and-add approach for complex ones, almost any area becomes calculable.
Questions & answers
How do I find the area of an irregular shape?
Break it into simple shapes — rectangles, triangles — calculate each area, and add them up. An L-shaped room is two rectangles.
Why is area in square units?
Because it measures two dimensions multiplied together, so the units multiply too — metres times metres gives square metres.
