The rules that make exponents powerful

Exponents follow neat rules worth knowing: multiplying powers of the same base adds the exponents, and raising a power to a power multiplies them. The less obvious cases have elegant meanings — a negative exponent means one over the number, a fractional exponent means a root (so the power of one-half is a square root), and anything to the power of zero is one. Beyond the rules, exponents describe explosive growth: exponential growth, where a quantity multiplies at each step, quickly outpaces anything linear, which is why compound interest, population growth and viral spread all become dramatic.
