How to Calculate a Percentage (The Three Types People Mix Up)

Percentages trip people up not because the arithmetic is hard, but because “what's the percentage?” is actually three different questions in a trench coat. Once you can spot which one you're being asked, the mistakes disappear.

The three questions

1. What is X% of a number? This finds a part of a whole — 20% of 80 is 16. You use it for discounts, tips, and shares.

2. What percentage is one number of another? This works backwards to find the rate — 16 out of 80 is 20%. You use it for scores, completion, and “what fraction did we hit?”

3. What's the percentage change between two numbers? This measures an increase or decrease relative to where you started — going from 80 to 96 is a 20% rise. You use it for price changes, growth, and before-and-after.

They need different calculations, and reaching for the wrong one is where nonsense answers come from. The fix is simply to pause and ask which of the three you actually mean.

The trap in percentage change

Percentage change hides two classic mistakes. First, it's always measured against the original value, not the new one — a rise from 80 to 96 is compared to the starting 80. Second, and stranger: a percentage rise followed by the same percentage fall does not return you to where you started. A 50% gain then a 50% loss leaves you below the start, because the fall is calculated on the bigger number. It's exactly why a stock that drops 50% has to double — gain 100% — just to recover.
