Percentage Calculator
Work out percentages — a percent of a number, what percent one number is of another, and percentage change.
The three percentage questions
Most percentage problems are one of three: what is 15% of 80, what percent is 12 of 48, and what is the percentage change from one figure to another. This handles all three, so you can find a tip, a proportion, or an increase or decrease without remembering which way the sum goes.
Enter your numbers and the answer follows the question you are asking.
The mistake with percentage change
The one that trips people is percentage change, especially the difference between an increase and the decrease that undoes it. A price that rises 50% does not come back with a 50% cut, because the cut applies to the larger number, so a 50% rise needs only a 33% fall to reverse. This asymmetry catches people out with discounts, investments and statistics. Being clear about which number the percentage is taken from is the whole trick.
Percentage Calculator FAQ
Why doesn't a 50% rise reverse with a 50% cut?
Because the cut applies to the larger, increased number. A 50% rise needs only about a 33% fall to return to the original figure.
What can it calculate?
A percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, and the percentage change between two figures.
