Markup to Price Calculator

Set a selling price from your cost and a chosen markup percentage.

From cost to price

Pricing up from cost means adding a markup — a percentage of the cost — to reach a selling price. This works out the price from your cost and chosen markup, the everyday calculation for anyone setting prices on products they buy or make.

Markup, margin and covering more than cost

Two things are worth keeping straight. First, markup is a percentage of cost, which is not the same as margin, a percentage of the selling price — the same price gives a lower margin figure than markup, so be clear which you are aiming for. Second, a markup has to cover more than just the cost of goods: your other business costs, overheads and desired profit all come out of it, so a markup that only covers the item's cost plus a little leaves nothing for the rest of running a business. Setting a markup that genuinely sustains the business, rather than one that just feels reasonable, is what pricing is really about.

Common questions

Is markup the same as margin?

No — markup is a percentage of cost, margin a percentage of the selling price. The same price gives a lower margin figure than markup, so be clear which you mean.

What should a markup cover?

More than the item's cost — your overheads, other business costs and profit all come out of the markup, so it must be enough to sustain the whole business.
