Meta Tag Length Checker

Check whether your title and meta description fit within the lengths search engines display.

Fitting inside the space Google gives you

Search engines cut off titles and descriptions that run too long, replacing your careful ending with an ellipsis. This measures yours against the practical limits so you can see, before publishing, whether the whole thing will show or whether your key words are about to be truncated out of view.

Paste your title and description and it tells you whether each fits.

Why it is measured in pixels, really

A subtlety worth knowing: Google actually truncates by pixel width, not character count, so a title full of wide letters like W and M gets cut sooner than one full of narrow letters like i and l. Character limits — roughly fifty to sixty for titles, a hundred and fifty to a hundred and sixty for descriptions — are a reliable guide, but that is why two titles of the same length can behave differently. Aim comfortably within the limits and the important words survive.

Frequently asked questions

What are the safe lengths?

Roughly 50 to 60 characters for titles and 150 to 160 for descriptions, though the real limit is pixel width.

Why does character count not perfectly predict truncation?

Google cuts by pixel width, so a title of wide letters is trimmed sooner than the same-length title of narrow ones.
