Why percentiles beat raw scores
Percentiles are useful because they describe position within a group, which is often what matters more than the raw number. A test score of 80 means little alone, but knowing it is at the 95th percentile tells you it is excellent relative to everyone else. This is why percentiles are used for exam results, growth charts for children, and income comparisons — they turn a value into a rank. They are also more robust to outliers than averages, since they depend on order rather than magnitude. The median is simply the 50th percentile, and quartiles divide data into quarters. Thinking in percentiles is thinking in terms of where something stands in a distribution, which is frequently the more meaningful question.
