Probability and Odds Tool
Convert between probability and odds, and calculate both.
Two ways of expressing chance
Probability and odds both describe likelihood but express it differently, and converting between them is a frequent source of confusion. This calculates both and converts between them, so a chance stated either way makes sense.

Probability versus odds
The distinction matters because the two are genuinely different ratios. Probability is the chance of an event out of all outcomes — a one-in-four chance is a probability of a quarter. Odds compare the ways something can happen to the ways it cannot — the same event has odds of one to three, one favourable to three unfavourable. This is exactly where people slip, treating three-to-one odds as a one-in-three chance when it is actually one in four. Odds are the language of betting and appear in some statistical contexts, while probability is standard in maths and science. Being able to convert cleanly between them prevents a common and costly misreading, especially where money or risk is involved and the two are easily confused.
Questions & answers
What is the difference between probability and odds?
Probability is the chance out of all outcomes; odds compare favourable to unfavourable outcomes. A one-in-four probability is odds of one to three.
Why do people confuse them?
Because three-to-one odds sound like a one-in-three chance, but they actually mean one in four — one favourable outcome to three unfavourable.
