What the slope tells you
Slope is one of the most practical ideas in coordinate geometry. Its sign tells direction — positive slopes rise left to right, negative ones fall — and its size tells steepness, with a large slope being steep and a slope of zero being flat. It is the same concept as the gradient of a road or a ramp, and the rate of change in any linear relationship: how much one thing changes per unit of another, like speed as distance over time. An undefined slope, from a vertical line, is the one special case, since it would mean dividing by zero. Understanding slope as rise over run connects the geometry of a line to real rates of change everywhere.
