Stacked Discount Calculator

Work out the true final price when multiple discounts are applied in sequence.

Layered discounts, done right

When more than one discount applies — a sale price with an extra coupon on top — the discounts do not simply add together. This works out the true final price when discounts are stacked, applying each in turn, so you see what you actually pay rather than the misleading sum of the percentages.

Enter the price and the discounts to see the real final price.

Why stacked discounts add up to less

The key insight is that a second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original, so two discounts always combine to less than their sum. An extra twenty percent off an already thirty-percent-off item is not fifty percent off — the twenty comes off the lower price, giving a combined saving in the mid-forties. Retailers understand that stacked offers read as bigger deals than they are, which is exactly why they are advertised that way. Working out the actual final price, step by step, reveals the genuine saving. The order of the discounts, incidentally, does not change the final price, though it can feel like it should.

Questions & answers

Do two discounts add up to their total?

No — the second applies to the already-reduced price, so 30% then an extra 20% gives a combined saving in the mid-forties, not 50%.

Does the order of discounts matter?

No — applying them in either order gives the same final price, even though it can feel like it should differ.
