Surface area versus volume, and why it matters
The relationship between surface area and volume is one of the most important ideas in science, because they scale differently as size changes: volume grows with the cube of size while surface area grows only with the square, so as things get bigger, they have proportionally less surface for their volume. This surface-area-to-volume ratio explains a huge amount — why small animals lose heat faster and must eat more relative to their size, why cells are small, why crushed ice melts faster than a block, and why large structures need different engineering than small ones. For a given shape, surface area is what governs anything happening at the boundary: heat exchange, evaporation, coating, absorption. It is far more than a geometry exercise.
