Even splits and the alternatives
An even split is the simplest and often the friendliest approach, saving the awkwardness of itemising who had what. It works best when everyone ordered roughly similarly; when one person had a lavish meal and another a salad, an even split can feel unfair, and splitting by what each ordered is fairer though more effort. There is also the income-based approach for households sharing regular costs. For the common case of a group meal where spending was broadly comparable, though, tipping on the total and dividing evenly is quick, transparent and keeps the evening relaxed — which is usually the point.
