Engagement Rate Calculator

Calculate your social engagement rate from likes, comments and shares, with the formula, a worked example and benchmark figures.

What engagement rate tells you

Engagement rate measures how actively your audience interacts with your content, rather than just how many people follow you. It is the number brands and creators watch, because a small audience that genuinely engages is often worth more than a large one that scrolls past. This works it out from your interactions and audience size.

The formula

Engagement rate is your total interactions divided by your audience, as a percentage. There are two common bases:

By followers: ER = (likes + comments + shares) / followers x 100By reach: ER = (likes + comments + shares) / reach x 100

Dividing by followers is the common public method since anyone can see follower counts. Dividing by reach — the number who actually saw the post — is more accurate, because it measures engagement among people the post reached, not your whole follower list, many of whom never see any given post.

Worked example

A post with a modest account:

Engagement by followersFollowers: 5,000Likes 320, comments 45, shares 15 = 380 interactionsER = 380 / 5,000 x 100 = 7.6%

Is that good?

Engagement rate tends to fall as an account grows, because large audiences are less uniformly interested, so a good rate depends on your size. These are rough, commonly-cited guideposts rather than hard rules:

Account sizeTypical solid engagement rate
Under 5,000 (nano)Often 5% and above
5,000–50,000 (micro)Around 2–5%
50,000–500,000 (mid)Around 1.5–3%
500,000+ (large)Often below 1.5%

Benchmarks also vary a lot by platform and niche, so compare against accounts like yours rather than an absolute number. The trend over time on your own account is more telling than any single figure.

Questions & answers

How do I calculate engagement rate?

Add your likes, comments and shares, divide by your followers (or by reach for a truer figure), and multiply by 100. For 380 interactions on 5,000 followers, that is 7.6%.

Should I divide by followers or reach?

Reach is more accurate because it counts people who actually saw the post, but followers is used publicly since it is visible. Both are valid if you are consistent.

What is a good engagement rate?

It depends on size — smaller accounts often see higher rates. Roughly, 5%+ is strong for a small account, while large accounts often sit below 1.5%. Compare against similar accounts.

Why does engagement rate drop as I grow?

Larger audiences are less uniformly interested and the platform shows each post to a smaller fraction, so the rate typically falls even as raw numbers rise.
