Character Counter
Count characters and words as you type, and check your text against the character limits of every major social platform.
Writing to fit the platform
Every social network caps how much you can post, and going even one character over means your caption is cut off, your bio is truncated, or your post is rejected outright. This counts your characters and words live as you type and shows how you stand against each platform's limit, so you can trim a caption to fit before you paste it in rather than discovering the problem there.
Common platform limits
These are the character limits creators bump into most often. Platforms change these from time to time, and paid tiers sometimes raise them, so treat the numbers as a working guide and check the app if you are close to an edge:
| Where | Approx. character limit |
|---|---|
| X / Twitter post (standard) | 280 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 |
| Instagram bio | 150 |
| TikTok caption | 2,200 |
| Facebook post | 63,206 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 |
| YouTube title | 100 |
| YouTube description | 5,000 |
| Bluesky / Mastodon post | 300 / 500 |
The limits that bite hardest are the short ones — a bio at 150 characters, a title at 100 — because they force real editing. It is also worth knowing that some platforms count differently: emoji and certain characters can take up more than one unit, and links are sometimes counted as a fixed length regardless of the real URL, so the app's own counter is the final word when you are right at the edge.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my caption get cut off?
You have exceeded the platform's character limit, so it truncates what shows. Counting before you post lets you trim it to fit.
Do emoji count as one character?
Not always — many emoji and some special characters take up more than one unit in a platform's count, so a caption full of emoji fits less text than the number suggests.
Are these limits fixed?
No — platforms change them and paid tiers sometimes raise them. Treat the figures as a guide and check the app when you are close to the limit.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The counting happens entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
