Pace Calculator
Work out running pace, time or distance from the other two.
Pace, time and distance
Running links three numbers — pace, time and distance — and given any two you can find the third. This calculates whichever you need: the pace to hold for a target finish time, the time a distance will take at a given pace, or the distance covered. It is the everyday maths of training and race planning.
Enter two of pace, time and distance to get the third.
Planning a race by pace
Pace — minutes per mile or kilometre — is how runners think, because it is what you actually control moment to moment. Working backwards from a goal finish time to the pace it requires is how you plan a race and pace it evenly, rather than setting off too fast and fading. It also lets you convert a training run's numbers into a predicted race time, or check whether a target is realistic. Getting comfortable moving between pace, time and distance is central to structured running.
Questions & answers
What can it work out?
Any one of pace, time or distance from the other two — for example the pace needed to hit a target finish time.
Why do runners think in pace?
Because pace is what you control moment to moment, so planning a race means working out the pace a goal time requires.
