What changes how far paint goes
Coverage varies more than the tin's stated figure suggests, because it depends on the surface and the job. A smooth, sealed, previously-painted wall covers well; a rough, textured or porous surface like bare plaster or masonry drinks paint and covers far less. A big colour change, especially dark over light or the reverse, needs more coats to look even. The first coat on new material always covers less than later ones.
